Sermon Booklet excerpt:  How Demons Affect Your Life.  By Rev. Edwin G. Lawfer

In the early years of the Twentieth Century there was a young man in Philadelphia that was raised in a religious home.  His mother would attend daily Mass, and they had an altar in the home and religious artifacts on the wall.  He was definitely raised religious, but his religion was not effectively rubbing off on him.  When he was quite young he embarked on a career of robbery and was arrested very many times, served his sentences, and was released numerous times.  Finally he appeared before the judge and was told, "You do not seem to be able to change your ways, so I am going to sentence you to the penitentiary."  The young man cried out, "I want to change, I want to be different, but why doesn't someone show me how I can?"  He went to serve his sentence, and apparently someone heard his cry, and they mailed him a Bible.  He had been raised religious, but never was given any information from the Bible. He became curious, and found some other inmates who told him that the power in the Bible is in the Words of Christ.  They told him to read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and you'll find the answers to your problems.  He did exactly that, and he kept reading, and continued reading as Jesus said to do in John 8:31-32.  He read the Gospels all day long, and at night he read until the lights were turned off; he never stopped reading.  Soon he knew his life had been transformed by the Word of Christ, and became willing to serve the Lord for the rest of his life.  He miraculously was released early from prison, and he kept on reading the Word.  He said, "I must let people know what I found out in the Bible."  He got a soap box and began preaching on street corners, and God met his needs.  He continued preaching until the churches opened their doors to him, and he traveled around the country telling the story that Jesus saves until he went to be with the Lord some sixty years later.  God had made a new man out of him. That which the penal institutions could not do, God did.  He just continued reading and memorizing Christ's Words until the power within those Words became the catalyst to do what no man could do in his life.  As Jesus said in Mark 10:27, "With man it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible."

Sermon Booklet Excerpt:  The Secret Power That Breaks Habits.  By Rev. Edwin G. Lawfer

The Bible tells us that this whole world, since the fall of Adam and Eve, lies in the power of Satan.  You may be sure that he has not missed a single person that has come into the world.  There is not a single perfect person that sinneth not in this world; for all have sinned and come short of God's glory (Romans 3:23).  The Bible tells us that, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4:6).  The knowledge that we are lacking is the knowledge that Jesus came into this world to bring.  Jesus told us of Satan's power, but He also told us that He came to give us a greater power within that is strong enough to break Satan's power in our lives.  Once the power of Satan is broken in our lives, the power of the habit that Satan places there has been abolished.  In 1 John 3:8 we are told that it was for this purpose that the Son of God was manifested, in order to destroy the works of the devil in our lives.  We looked at Satan's power to control people, to control our thoughts, and our actions, and the classic Scriptural illustration of that is found in the 13th chapter of John, when Satan used Judas Iscariot to betray the Lord.  I like the expanded translations of the New Testament where many of them tell of the force in the words that Satan used to put in the heart of Judas to betray Jesus.  In the Greek it really shows that Satan put the thought into Judas with such a force that it stuck solidly in his mind, to such an extent that he could not shake it loose.  We have all felt this power of Satan to put thoughts in our minds, so powerfully that we could not shake them loose.  The gambler, the drug addict, the alcoholic, the covetous person, the shoplifter, the sex pervert, the habitual liar, the murderer, the robber, the burglar, and the list goes on ad infinitum.  None of these victims realize that Satan is the cause of their problem, and they will not ever find this out, unless they are able to get into the Words of Christ and read the Gospels, where Jesus exposes Satan's power to deceive.  The difficulty that we encounter there is that Satan guards against a person being able to read and study the Gospels.  In Mark the 4th chapter, we see that power of Satan revealed, which prevents people from staying in the Gospels.  In Mark 4:15 Jesus describes that He is the sower that sows the Word, but as soon as a person hears it, immediately Satan comes along with a powerful force to steal away the Word that Jesus had sown in the heart.  He does not want anybody to find the truth of God's Word, and he exerts his greatest attack against us to prevent us from reading or studying the Word.
